What is COVID-19?

covid-07.png

COVID-19 is the illness caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.

SARS-CoV-2 is a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus and a member of the coronavirus family which includes SARS and MERS (“The Species Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Related Coronavirus,” 2020).

According to the CDC, COVID-19 is characterized by a number of signs and symptoms including fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion, or runny nose, nausea or vomiting and diarrhea.

As with any virus, SARS-CoV-2 is always changing through mutations. As mutations occur, variants occur, and depending on how the virus is transmitted, those variants can emerge and can disappear, but they can also persist. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple variants of SARS-CoV-2 have been documented in the US and globally.
